Rosetta Stone

Summary

Rosetta Stone updates, as well as some of the functionality of the software, needs to connect to the Internet to get its content.  Some parts of the program connect directly, while other parts will go through a proxy.  These steps cover everything you need to do to make it all work.

Applies To

SecureSchool, ISBossBox, LibraryDoor, Rosetta Stone

More Information

  1. Go to "Website Filtering" -> "Website Access", and add the following entries as "Unfiltered":
    • rosettastone.com
    • rosettastoneclassroom.com
    • rosettalearn.com
    • rosettastoneenterprise.com
  2. Go to "Setup" -> "Hosts" and add the following host entry:
    • IP Address: 199.27.208.35
    • Host Name: resources.rosettastone.com
  3. Go to "Firewall" -> "Protocol Rules" and add the following rule:
    • Name: Rosetta Stone
    • Type: Allow
    • Protocol: TCP
    • Direction: From Inside
    • Source Address: "0.0.0.0/0"
    • Source Port: Leave Blank
    • Destination Address: "206.16.230.0/25"(Note: as of 1/31/2012 their new IP range is 199.27.208.0/22)
    • Destination Port: "80,443"
  4. Go to "Commit Changes" and click on "Restart".  Your work on SecureSchool is now complete
  5. Next, you have to flush out the DNS caches on your network (or wait several hours and try again later).  To do this, go to each of your DNS servers on your network and clear their caches.  On Windows, you would run the DNS management tool under Administrative Tools, right-click the server name, and click on "Clear Cache".
  6. Once you've cleared the caches on the servers, you need to clear it on the workstation.  You can do this by either rebooting the workstation or running "ipconfig /flushdns" at a command prompt.
  7. After all the caches are clear, you should be able to go to a workstation and run "ping resources.rosettastone.com" from a command prompt and it should ping 206.16.230.35.  If it pings a different IP address, then DNS forwarding isn't setup correctly in your environment.  See http://kb.k12usa.com/Knowledgebase/Setting-up-DNS-Forwarders-in-Windows or http://kb.k12usa.com/Knowledgebase/Setting-Up-DNS-Forwarders-on-OS-X for help on how to setup forwarding.
